Some Beasts Should Go Extinct

Extinction is usually not a good thing, it is most awful when any living organism goes extinct. I personally think the world is better with more animals, plants, etc. Makes things more colorful.

Though even in 2010 we have a dinosaur that lurks around, it's been around in this fine nation since the early 19th century. That dinosaur is the "Labor Union."

At first, they were a great idea, people were being forced to work horrendously long hours with no breaks, little pay, and great exposure to danger. By organizing and uniting it helped pave the way for better pay and conditions, and helped create federal law that secured many rights for American workers. Rather than quit right there, they kept going, after all a union could turn a huge profit.

As time went on they went from being champions of workers rights to a microcosm of George Orwell's "INGSOC" society. The outer party of hard working laborers who must walk in lock step with the higher ups or face sanction, and the inner party which consists of the union bosses who live rather nicely off the dues of those who toil. For a system inspired by that filthy wretch Karl Marx who claimed he wanted the workers to have power, the whole union system appears to be that which he claimed to despise.

Of course any intelligent human being realizes that Marx was a thoughtless monster who views people only as numbers and means of production, so do unions. Though I think most unions prefer to see their members as dollar signs or money in their pockets.

Seriously, what good do unions do? They fleece members for dues, threaten them with sanctions (or in many cases violence) should members oppose certain platforms or refuse to strike, and negotiate shoddy contracts which often give dues paying members the short end, the company the short end, and the union the meal ticket.

In my hometown almost 30 years ago the steel union demanded a $1 an hour pay raise and they got it...the mills then shut down and lots of people were out of work. The region has yet to recover, all over a $1 an hour raise. I am not saying people should work for free or for the lowest wage possible, but I think having a job is better than having nothing.

Today a local school district went on strike, never mind the kids who need educations, they want to pay less for benefits in addition to a 15% pay increase. Teachers should make more, but they should also earn it. Pay for play-they better your students do, the more you get paid. If that existed, the graduation rate would be through the roof.

Makes you think twice when you realize how close the Obama Dictatorship in the Making is to the labor unions in this nation. Then again they are both really good at screwing up good things.

To close, the labor union is a dinosaur that needs to die. Their usefulness has been outlived and legislation can prevent or mitigate the so called injustices they seek to remedy. Should they be legal? Oh yes, but make union membership voluntary for all businesses, no more closed shops. If any union is found guilty of intimidation, that chapter is closed. We have rules, why not enforce them?
